Getting a Grok API Key

For use with CouncilAI

Grok's API is provided through xAI's developer console — a separate product from X Premium or SuperGrok. You don't need either of those subscriptions to get an API key. Takes about five minutes.

This isn't free after your credits run out. New accounts typically get a small amount of promotional credit, then it's pay-as-you-go. Typical CouncilAI conversations cost fractions of a cent to a few cents each.

Step 1 — Create an xAI account

Go to the xAI Console

Visit console.x.ai and sign up with an email address, Google sign-in, or your X account (linking an X account doesn't change anything about API access or cost).

Step 2 — Add credits or billing

Set up your account for API use

New accounts often start with some promotional credit. You'll be prompted to add a payment method once that runs out, or if your account requires it upfront.

Step 3 — Create your API key

Go to API Keys

In the left sidebar, click API Keys (or go directly to console.x.ai/team/default/api-keys). Click Create API Key, name it "CouncilAI", and create it.

Step 4 — Copy your key

Save it immediately

Copy the key value shown right after creation and store it somewhere safe — you won't be able to view it again after closing the dialog.

Once you have your key, go back to CouncilAI and paste it into the Grok field in Settings, then click Test & Save.
